This book constitutes a comprehensive reappraisal of Saussure's Cours de
Linguistique G=E9n=E9rale and other related source materials. It seeks to
resituate Saussurean thought in relation to contemporary developments in
linguistics and semiotics with a view to re-exploring the foundational
principles of a theory of social meaning-making. It also challenges most of
the currently held orthodoxies concerning Saussure. In so doing, I provide a
detailed re-reading of Saussure in the light of contemporary developments in
the human, life and physical sciences. This includes my own translations of
the French language source materials that I refer to as well as many
illustrative text analyses of linguistic, visual, and other semiotic=
 modalities.
